- Description
- The Asia-Pacific is a region of rapid change, cultural alienation and environmental crisis, with a threatening divide between city and countryside. "Urbanisation is currently at 42% across cities in the Asia-Pacific region, and a growth rate of 2.5% per annum means that they will have to accommodate an additional 1.7 billion people in the next 40 years:' says Professor Lehmann. "This represents a doubling of the current urban population." As challenges mount, there is a need to identify effective strategies and propose practical solutions to support sustainable urban development. These must be based on the conditions specific to each area of the region, which is characterised by great diversity in terms of economy, politics, culture, climate and the natural environment. There is an urgent need to build more energy-efficient cities and neighbourhoods based on renewable energy sources.
